Moses Shines, Mikel Struggles As Conte Loses Chelsea Debut
Nigeria stars Mikel Obi and Victor Moses posted contrasting performances on Saturday as Antonio Conte began his Chelsea reign with a 2-0 defeat at Rapid Vienna.
Rapid scored first in the eighth minute when Joelinton rounded Asmir Begovic in the Chelsea goal. Tomi Correa sealed the win for the hosts in the 83rd minute with a tap-in.
Although both Super Eagles players started the pre-season friendly in Vienna, it was Moses who impressed as Mikel struggled.
Moses started on the left with Willian operating on the opposite flank, but the former Wigan star was the one involved in almost all of Chelsea’s good moves.
Moses was a thorn in Rapid Vienna’s side and he was brought down as he latched on to a Nemanja Matic pass and raced towards the penalty in the second half.
However, the referee did not give the foul.
The Eagles star also won a free-kick after being clattered from behind as he collected Ola Aina’s pass and then almost set up a goal as he fed Oscar, who in turn passed to Nathaniel Chalobah.
Moses did enough to impress Conte, who gave the Nigerian a warm handshake as he was replaced by Christian Atsu in the 80th minute.
Mikel also did not finish the match, he was replaced by Chalobah in the 58th minute.
