Mikel: Olympic Eagles One Step Closer To Gold
Super Eagles skipper Mikel Obi believes the Nigeria U-23s are a step closer to clinching another gold medal after sealing a quarter-final berth at the 2016 Rio Olympics football event, Completesportsigeria.com reports.
The Chelsea star who starred for the Olympic Eagles in their opening two games is brimming with confidence after they defeated Sweden 1-0 in Manaus on Sunday.
He also thinks this current squad can re-enact the feat achieved by the Atlanta 1996 squad who went on to win gold against all odds.
He tweeted via his newly opened account @mikel_john_obi: “Heading to the 1/4 finals! One step closer to Gold. Great team work, so proud of the boys and coaches.”
The Olympic Eagles are expected to rest some of their top stars for their final group game against Colombia in Sao Paulo.
Nigeria will likely face whoever finishes runners-up in Group A which comprises Brazil, Denmark, South Africa and Iraq.
The quarter-finals are billed to hold this weekend.
