Liverpool’s hopes of a sensational return for Barcelona striker Luis Suarez have been dampened after the Catalan goal scorer admitted to wanting a move back to Ajax should he not retire in Spain, 90min reports.
There have been rumours circulating that the poacher is in line for a shock return to Anfield before he retires from football altogether, but this appears to have been quashed by his recent comments.
The Uruguayan international signed for Liverpool in 2010 from Ajax, and went on to become one of the club’s most prolific strikers, scoring 82 goals in 133 appearances for the Reds, including that memorable title bid in 2013/14 where the 29-year-old scored 31 goals in 33 appearances.
However, speaking to de Telegraaf, via the Metro, Suarez has announced that his preferred destination would be to where it all began in Holland, claiming that the Dutch giants were the ones who made him famous.
“All my dreams came true at Barcelona and I hope to stay here for the remainder of my career,” said Suarez.
“But I will have to keep playing at the highest level.“Of course, I would like to return to Ajax some day. Even if it was just to thank Ajax. Ajax are the club that made me famous in Europe.”
The former Anfield favourite has started his career at the Nou Camp in scintillating fashion, scoring an incredible 62 goals in 70 appearances for the La Liga reigning champions, with 59 of those all coming last season in all competitions.
This saw him recently pick up the ‘Europe’s Golden Boot’ award for scoring the most goals on the continent last season, and is in contention with his two Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Neymarto pick up the highly accredited Ballon d’Or.
