Ryan Giggs has admitted Manchester United and England midfielder Jesse Lingard was a nightmare in training, although he did go on to state that the player ‘did everything right’ when in the number ten position.
Giggs was speaking on ITV in the build-up to England’s game with Malta on Saturday, with Lingard making his England debut, and the Premier League icon had this to say about the 23-year-old:
“He can play a number of positions. He’ll give you energy, he’ll score goals, he’s a team player, but now at 23, he’s got to kick on.”
When on the topic of his coaching license, Giggs stated that as part of his programme, he was tasked with coaching a number 10, and was in awe of the play-maker since “he did everything right.”
Lingard made his breakthrough under Louis van Gaal last season, scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final and then scoring in the Community Shield victory against Leicester City after a mazy run.
The now-England international will now get his chance in the national team set-up, with new manager Gareth Southgate a known admirer from their days at the under-21s together, and he will be aware of how good Lingard can be.
If the player can add more goals and assists along the way then he’s certain to be a star for both United and the Three Lions over the coming years.
