Sunderland defender Jan Kirchhoff has been ruled out for up to six weeks after suffering a hamstring injury during his team’s 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, 90min reports.
The Black Cats have confirmed as much via their official website, and on Monday put out a statement which reads:
“Jan Kirchhoff has been ruled out for a minimum of six weeks after suffering a hamstring injury during Sunderland’s draw against West Bromwich Albion.
“The former Bayern Munich player was stretchered off in Saturday’s game at the Stadium of Light, and in order to assess the extent of the injury the 26-year-old underwent a scan which revealed he will be out for six to eight weeks.
“The midfielder will now focus on returning to action as soon as possible.”
This will come as a huge blow to Sunderland, who haven’t won a single game since the start of the season and have only amassed two points from seven matches. They also have key players in midfielders Lee CattermoleSteven PienaarAdnan Januzaj and Seb Larsson out injured as well.
Kirchhoff appeared to injure himself when landing after springing for a header in Saturday’s match.
Sunderland boss David Moyes has lamented on the situation, claiming that the team will miss the sidelined players a whole lot.
“Not to have him, Steven Pienaar and Adnan Januzaj is massive, because they help us play better and we are short in that area,” he said to the Sunderland Echo.
They are big, big misses to this club.
“If we lose Kirch and we lose Catts, we lose a little bit of the steel and a little bit of the boys who have been here before while we’re looking to build a new team.”
