Brazilian Team Chapecoense Involved In Horrific Plane Crash In Colombia

The footballing world may soon be mourning after it was reported on Tuesday that Brazilian Serie A club Chapecoense were present on the plane that crashed in Colombia, 90min reports.

Reports are still to be confirmed, but it is believed that the Copa Sudamericana finalists were amongst the 81 people sat on the chartered plane flying from Bolivia to Medellin in Colombia and early reports indicate that there are 76 confirmed dead with just five survivors.

Sky Sports commented that a Medellin airport official claimed just six survivors may have been pulled from the wreckage, but either way it could go down as the biggest sporting disaster of all time.

Chapecoense, a Brazilian Serie A side, have been having one of the most successful seasons of the club’s history and were scheduled to play Medellin’s Atletico Nacional in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final, South America’s version of the Europa League.

The Chape, as they are known, are not traditionally a top tier club, but they rose through the lower leagues of Brazil in recent years, reaching Serie A in 2014 where they have successfully managed to stay.

According to Sky Sports,

“The plane had declared an emergency due to power failure before losing contact with the control tower. Colombia has been hit by heavy storms which are hampering rescue efforts.”
