Cristiano Ronaldo has turned down a £257m move to the Chinese Super League, according to claims made by his agent Jorge Mendes.
The Real Madrid superstar was the subject of the astronomical bid from an unnamed club in China but, despite being offered a mammoth £85m-a-year contract to trade European football for the bright lights of Asia, Ronaldo rebuffed the advances of his would-be suitors, 90min reports.
Mendes exclusively told Sky Italia: “From China, they’ve offered 300m (£256.6m) Euros to Real Madrid and more than 100m (£85m) per year to the player.
“But money is not everything. Real Madrid is his life. Cristiano is happy at Real Madrid and it is impossible to go to China.”
Mendes went on to state that it would be “impossible” for any club in China, regardless of how much they were willing to spend, to entice the 31-year-old Portugal captain away from the La Liga giants.
He added:
“The Chinese market is a new market. They can buy a lot of players, but then again it is impossible to go for Ronaldo. Cristiano is the best player in the world and best ever. It is normal to have some offers.“He won the European Championship with Portugal, it’s like winning the Italian league with Genoa: they were not the favourite.”
Ronaldo has been tentatively linked with a move away from Real over the past few seasons, with former club Manchester United reported to be considering a reunion with the striker over the past 18 months.
However, the ex-Sporting star penned a new five-year contract with the defending Champions League holders back in November, with a reported salary of £365,000-a-week on the table for signing the new deal.
Ronaldo has enjoyed a remarkable 2016, with success in UEFA’s flagship club competition followed up with an inaugural trophy triumph with Portugal at this summer’s Euro 2016 tournament in France, the Club World Cup with Real and a fourth Ballon d’Or award earlier this month.
The world-famous footballer also revealed that he could continue playing for at least another decade after he had put pen-to-paper on the new contract last month.
He stated:
“I want to keep making history and I’m sure that in the next five years I will keep scoring goals and winning trophies with the best club in the world. I want to finish my career at this club but I want this to be my penultimate contract. I think I have got 10 years left.”
