Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic has revealed the club’s secret in so quickly getting over a shocking season in 2015/16 to now lead the Premier League by seven points at Christmas – no one ever talks about it and they’re trying to forget it even happened.
“We have tried to forget last season. I forgot very quickly the season we were champions because in football every day is a different challenge, every day a new story,” Matic is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror in the wake of an 11th consecutive win.
“No-one asks what happened before. The present and the future are the most important things, which is just as well for us because last year was not good,” he added.
Chelsea’s malaise even carried over into the start of the 2016/17 campaign, while Antonio Conte got to grips since taking charge in July. But since losing heavily against Arsenal in September, a change of formation and a fresh mentality has seen Conte’s team become unstoppable.
Hull, Leicester, Manchester United, Southampton, Everton, Middlesbrough, Tottenham, Manchester City, West Brom, Sunderland and now Crystal Palace have all been brushed aside in the run so far.
“11 games ago, we were eight points behind Manchester City, but now we are out in front of them. That’s why everyone loves football – because anything can happen,” Matic continued.
The last few games have seen resilient 1-0 wins, and now Chelsea will have a fresh challenge when they face Bournemouth on Boxing Day without key pair Diego Costa and N’Golo Kante as a result of suspension.
“We have won 11 games in a row, which is not easy in the Premier League, but we don’t have Diego and N’Golo in the next game, so we will have to cope with that. You have situations like this, but other teams have to cope with them as well so it is normal,” Matic explained.
