Barcelona have agreed a deal to sign Valencia right-back Joao Cancelo next summer for an estimated €30m, according to Spanish media outlet Sport.
The Portuguese star has been heavily linked with a move to the Nou Camp as Barcelona manager Luis Enrique struggles to find a successor to Daniel Alves, who left the club last summer for Juventus.
Cancelo is expected to join up with his new teammates next July and will sign a five-year deal with the Catalans, who have demanded that the matter be kept confidential and made official at the end of the season., 90min reports.
The player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has been working with Barca to agree the deal and though the defender was keen to move in January, the Catalan’s insisted they were unable to spend money until next summer due to financial reasons.
Cancelo has now asked Valencia to remain at the Mestalla in the new year, despite rumoured interest from a number of other European clubs including Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
Although Valencia and Barcelona have yet to agree on a fee for the player, the rest of the deal is all but confirmed and whilst the €30m that has been touted may be a lot for someone so young, Barca see Cancelo as a long term solution to their problems at right back.
The 22-year-old has only recently broken into the Portuguese national side after making his debut last September in a 5-0 friendly win over Gibraltar. With his move to the Nou Camp all but confirmed, Cancelo must now concentrate on helping Valencia avoid relegation from La Liga, as the club sit perilously close to the relegation zone.
