Community Shield: Musa Impresses As Zlatan Bags United Winner
Super Eagles winger, Ahmed Musa, was in action but ended on the losing side as Manchester United defeated Leicester City 2-1 in the Community Shield on Sunday at Wembley Stadium, Complete Sports Nigeria reports.
Musa was introduced before the start of the second half for Shinji Okazaki and was impressive as his speed and direct running unsettled the United defence.
Goals from new signing, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and a brilliant solo goal by Jesse Lingard won the game for Manchester United.
Leicester’s goal was scored by Jamie Vardy following a poor back pass by Maroune Fellaini.
Manchester United had the first attempt on goal on 10 minutes through Anthony Martial who surged into Leicester 18-yard box with a powerful run before shooting into the side-netting.
Two minutes later Wayne Rooney had a chance but could only head his effort into the arms of Kasper Schmeichel after getting on the end of Luke Shaw’s deflected cross.
United kept creating chances and came close again in the 15th minute through Maroune Fellaini who fired in a shot on the turn which Schmeichel gathered at the second attempt.
In the 19th minute, Shinji Okazaki had Leicester’s first attempt on goal after he was teed up by Jamie Vardy but his shot took a slight deflection and went off for a corner.
Leicester almost profited from the corner but the header came off the cross bar.
Leicester came close again through Vardy but Eric Bailly’s last ditch tackle deflected the ball for a corner.
United eventually broke the dead-lock in the 32nd minute through Lingard, who dribbled past Leicester players before slotting the ball past Kasper Schmeichel to put United 1-up.
Prior to the start of the second half, Leicester made two changes, bringing on Ahmed Musa and Demarai Gray for Marc Albrighton and Okazaki.
Musa made his presence felt in the 48th minute but Bailly gets across to clear after a clever pass from Vardy.
In the 53rd minute, Leicester drew level through Vardy who pounced on a poor pass by Fellaini.
United made their first changes on 61 minutes with Ander Herrera and Juan Mata coming on forMichael Carrick and Lingard.
A minute later, Leicester made another double substitution with new signings, Nampalys Mendy and Luis Hernandez coming on for Andy King and Danny Simpson.
Rooney almost made it 2-1 for United on 69 minutes off Fellaini’s pass but Schmeichel gathers.
In the 71st minute, Gray swung in a dangerous free-kick which De Gea held firmly.
Ibrahimovic saw his 79th minute effort cleared off the line by Drinkwater.
Musa almost scored for Leicester on 81 minutes but his header off Robert Huth’s flick went just over the bar.
United eventually scored the winning goal through Ibrahimovic in the 83rd minute, who headed in Valencia’s cross.
