Spurs have been handed an injury boost after Belgian centre back Toby Alderweireld was stretchered off against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, 90min reports.
According to the Guardian, the defender, who has been ruled out of his side’s Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, is likely to be on the sidelines for weeks rather than months.
Alderweireld is set to have a scan on his injured knee to reveal the full extent of the damage, although Spurs are hopeful that it is not as concerning as first feared.
Mauricio Pochettino is likely to pair Jan Vertonghen with Eric Dier in Alderweireld’s absence, the England international having made his name as a centre back before moving to midfield.
“The good thing about Eric is he can play like a midfielder and a centre-back, and can perform good in several positions,” Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino said.
“That is important and we will see about the decision for Tuesday. It is one option more that we have.”
