One year ago on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp took the reigns at Liverpool following the sacking of former boss Brendan Rodgers, and since then has given the club a new direction, and perhaps some belief that they can become a major force in English and European football once more.
To find out just how much Klopp has had an impact in Merseyside, the Daily Express spoke to a variety of members at Anfield from both the past and present to see exactly how the German coach is viewed and admired.
Reds defender Dejan Lovren weighed in, telling the newspaper that the German is not just a good coach, but a good man, after reliving a story involving his own daughter.
“When I had a problem with my daughter and she was ill and in hospital, she needed an operation,” said Lovren.
“It was at the time of the Augsburg game away in February and he said to me, ‘Go to Croatia. Be with your daughter'”.
Liverpool’s current first team coach Pepijn Lijnders suggested that he wasn’t nervous about Klopp’s introduction, speaking of how the former Borussia Dortmund coach represented modern, total football, and changed the atmosphere in the dressing room immediately.
“The moment Jurgen came back in the dressing room he changed everything in five minutes,” said Lijnders.
“We could leave the stadium knowing we were going to attack them at Anfield like they had never been attacked before.”
Former Reds boss Gerard Houllier has also praised the attacking style of Klopp, however, comparing the German coach to his own reign at Anfield, the Frenchman believes it may take another year for his tactics to produce trophies.
“I like his attacking philosophy,” said Houllier.
“And I like the way he shows protection and affection to his players. Maybe he needs another year to win – we rebuilt in 1999 and had success in 2001. But he will win trophies for Liverpool.”
