Messi Makes Decision On International Football Retirement
Lionel Messi shocked world football when he announced his international retirement following Argentina’s loss to Chile in the Copa America final.
Many believed that the superstar spoke in the heat of moment when he immediately announced after the match that he had just played his last game for his country.
It was understandable that Messi felt like quitting after the devastating shoot-out loss. It was the third time Messi and co. had lost a major final in as many years as they lost the 2014 World Cup in extra-time to Germany as well as penalty shoot-out defeats in the previous two summers to Chile in the Copa America.
However, according to Argentinian newspaper La Nacion – one of the leading newspapers in the country – the 29-year-old has already changed his mind.
The newspaper interviewed many people close to Messi with the report concluding that he plans to rejoin the Argentina side – possibly in November – as they attempt to qualify for the Russia World Cup in two years time.
The report states:
“The pundits and fans – not necessarily the same thing – can rest easy: Messi will return to the [international] selection.”
While one former teammate said:
“He will come back, and already has 2018 Russia obsession.”
However, they also state that they don’t know exactly when Messi will return to action for the national side and “it’s just a pause,” rather than a goodbye.
There were also quotes from Marcelo D’Andrea, Messi’s physical therapist, friend and bodyguard.
He said:
“I have no doubt that he will play the World Cup. We have great faith. You have to leave him alone. I trust her silence. He loves selection. Give everything for their country.”
So don’t worry Messi fans. It looks like we could well be seeing him in Russia in two years after all.
