Diego Costa has assured the club and fans alike that he is still very happy at Chelsea, but also admitted that he always keeps one eye on the fortunes of his old team Atletico Madrid, 90min reports.
The Chelsea striker scored 27 goals in 35 appearances in his last season at Atletico back in 2013/14, before joining the Blues that summer.
But he was close to re-signing for the Spanish outfit during this summer’s transfer window, after a difficult season saw him score just four goals in 20 appearances before Jose Mourinho’s sacking from Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea were never tempted to part with Costa though, and it seems the striker was just as keen to stay in London.
As reported by ESPN, the Spanish media asked Costa if he misses Madrid, with the Brazilian-born striker responding:
“A little. I like Madrid a lot, have had some very happy moments here. But I’m very happy in London.”
He did add that he maintained an interest in his former club though.
“I always follow Atletico and watch what they’re doing. They’re doing really well and I am so happy for them. Atletico have been at this level for a few years — battling for every trophy and beating the best sides. I’m not surprised because they’re a top side and they deserve it.”
Costa was additionally asked about Cesc Fabregas, who was left out of the Spain squad for their two upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Albania. This comes after Fabregas lost his place inAntonio Conte’s starting XI, but Costa had words of encouragement for his fellow countryman.
“He knows that he has the chance to come back to the national team one day. It’s always important to be called back by the national team.”
